Webtoon Recommendation: Clinic Of Horrors

Clinic of Horrors is a 2-year-old comedy horror comic created by artist PokuriMio and writer Merryweather. Together, in March 2019, they released their first episode of their Webtoon comic.

Clinic of Horrors is set in a strange city where there’s a clinic that will treat victims of horrific and strange diseases – for a price. The series has 65 chapters out as I write this post.

What I particularly like so far about this series is:

The Characters

The characters in this story are very varied, with interesting personalities and unique struggles (although some motivations are still unknown…) and designs. The story follows Bianca, an apathetic and no-nonsense nursing student (who secretly has a heart of gold) as she works at a clinic with Dr Albright to treats all kinds of strange illnesses.

I like that the story spends time with Bianca at the clinic as her and the doctor help people. It also highlights the more ‘illegal’ arrangements the doctor has to make to keep the clinic afloat. But it also follows around her more daily life occurrences where there’s strange things happening in the subway, and time with her university friends as they hang out and have classes.

The Art and Storyworld

The art is colourful with its main characters, and this really contrasts against how bleak the rest of their ‘crapsack’ world is. A lot of the illnesses people suffer from are related to monsters and mutations due to the world’s body-horror epidemic, which is an interesting concept. These illnesses are all over the place where characters go, and people are seen to struggle to prevent and cure themselves of these diseases as they cannot afford to.

The Mystery

In the story the major antagonist is introduced as a man wearing all yellow, who owns a company that is a pharmaceutical monopoly giant. The story reveals that the doctor Bianca works for used to work for this man in yellow’s company as a medical researcher. His current work as a ‘backalley doctor’ is actually his way of atoning for this previous job.

For an unspecified reason, the doctor walked out on this company and his co-workers. What exactly it is that the doctor was doing, is something we’ll have to find out as the story progresses.

An Updated Pop Vinyl Collection

I have somehow managed to amass even more pop vinyls since last time. I often wonder how, but then remember that the vast majority were gifts or arcade prizes (along with some really cute plushies…) and I am grateful for all of them! Especially since I love decorating my room with things that I love, and merchandise is a big part of that for me.

It’s so hard to pick favourites, but this corner has to have some of them…

Fun fact about the Eeyore: it was a present ordered online for the diamond edition (which is usually glittery black). So when it arrived blue, the person who bought it for me was very confused and about to call the supplier to ask why it was the wrong colour. They then looked it up online, and realised that this was the ‘chase’ version and that the supplier did a thing where you could win it if you ordered online

I’ve had to start budgeting when I go to the second-hand book festival run each year in my city

It’s a bit of a Kingdom Hearts shrine area…

The 2020 Releases I’m Most Excited For

Animal Crossing: New Horizons

I love, and will forever love, Animal Crossing. I can’t wait to start playing on it the Switch and be given that golden ticket to a deserted island by the racoon I will forever be indebted to.

This is such a gorgeous series, so I can’t wait to stand around for hours just looking at everything.

I love AOT. And watching the anime’s final season is going to ruin me.

Yuri!!! On Ice Movie

Although there is no confirmed date yet for the movie, one can dream that it will be out 2020. BECAUSE I LOVE THIS SERIES WITH ALL MY HEART AND MY LEVEL OF EXCITEMENT FOR IT HAS NOT BEEN DAMPENED SINCE ITS ANNOUCEMENT.

My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising

I love MHA. I know the movie is already out but I haven’t watched it yet so I’m including it in this list. Can’t wait to cry over it, and then read non-stop fanfiction and go on a following fan artists spree these next few weeks.

She-Ra Season 5

Even though nothing is confirmed yet, I am putting it on this list because She-Ra: The Princesses of Power is one of my favourite Netflix series. Everything about it is so good, and I need more in my life.

Dragon Prince Season 4

This is another one of my favourite things I’ve watched on Netflix (and featured on the list despite that the next season has not yet been confirmed). Each season just keeps getting better, and that just makes me hyped for the next!

Umbrella Academy Season 2

Umbrella Academy was sooooooo good! I’m so keen for the next season! It can’t arrive fast enough!

All the Bright Places

This Netflix movie coming out is based upon Jennifer Niven’s book of the same name. I love her YA novels, so I’m interested to see what the movie will be like.

Brooklyn 99 Season 7

Any Brooklyn 99 is good.

Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)

The Harley Quinn animated series has made it up into my top 3 DC Universe TV series, which makes me excited to then go see Birds of Prey. Plus, Margot Robbie! Harley Quinn!

10 FACTS TO KNOW ABOUT CHARLES SCHULZ’S COMIC PEANUTS

“Happiness is a warm puppy” – Lucy

1. Snoopy’s original name was actually going to be Sniffy, but was already being used in another comic

   

2. Linus was named after a childhood friend of Schulz and so was Frieda who was based upon a former romantic interest of Schulz who turned down his proposal…

   

3. There are a total of 17 879 strips in this comic series. It ran for 50 years starting from the 2nd October 1950 until January 30th 2000

   

4. Linus didn’t actually speak for the first two years that he was featured in the comics

   

5. Because of Marcie’s glasses we never got to see her eyes until 1980 where in one strip Patty tries to convince her to where the glasses on top of her head and she ends up running into a pole

   

6. Peppermint Patty’s legal name is actually Patricia Reichardt

   

7. Frieda, the infamous redheaded girl and the object of Charlie’s affections, was never fully seen in the comic ever. Only once in 1998 did her silhouette get shown. However, when It’s Your First Kiss, Charlie Brown aired in 1977 everyone finally got to see what she looked like!

   

8. Apparently Charlie’s head is really hard to draw. There are also two head types for all the characters – the one based upon the Browns and the one based upon the van Pelts

They were skeptical about the facts that: children were cast as the voices of the characters despite their lack of professional training and experience for voice acting, Linus was given a monologue which contained Bible quotes, it has a jazzy track and had quite a slow storytelling pace. However, when the program then aired received many views. It then also later an Emmy and became one of the longest-running holidays specials of all time!

    

4 TIMES CHARACTERS DIDN’T FOLLOW THEIR OWN ADVICE

But you know, hindsight is 20-20, or whatever

1. Hamlet (from Shakespeare’s Hamlet)

   
   I understand that the theme of interiority and that subjectivity are important in this play. Which then makes sense as to why Hamlet spends forever and forever thinking about what to do throughout the play. He is well known as a character of inaction, especially considering the fact that he does actually develop a plan about how he should go about finding out if the ghost is real and about how to avenge his late father. But then throw in some complications along the way, and the result is that Hamlet somehow never  really manages to get a ton done. He takes forever in between telling himself to act and then actually ending up doing anything about it despite that he keeps telling himself that he should act.

2. Louise (from Alien)

   
   This entire movie is about linguistics and communication, yet the linguistics expert chooses not to talk to the guy she knows is going to become her husband about how their child is going to die from cancer and that they’ll get divorced one day too? Instead she just asks him that if he could see his whole life ahead of him, would be change anything?? To which he says that he doesn’t really know, so you know… maybe then once you’re married and everything and he then asks you if you want to make a baby you could mention how you already know that this baby you’ll conceive will die just to check with him to see how he feels about all of this??? I mean, I understand where Louise’s coming from. But by sharing her knowledge about her life with her partner she most likely could have saved them both from a lot of heartache

3. Lucy (from Peanuts)

   
   Lucy gives out some pretty bad advice in her psychiatric booth. So maybe it’s good that her ‘patients’ never listen to it. However, considering that her advice pretty much only consists of ‘snap out of it’ and the fact that she has some serious unrequited love going on for Schroeder, resulting in her listening to him play at the end of his toy piano a lot of the time despite that she knows that he wants to model his life after Mozart, who has a bachelor…. I don’t know, maybe it might be good for Lucy to ‘snap out’ of her infatuation by toning it down a bit?

4. Armin (from Attack on Titan)

   
   I am so, so glad that Armin didn’t follow his own advice because if he had then we wouldn’t have Armin crying “a person who cannot sacrifice everything, can change nothing!” as he jumps off his horse to run across the flat terrain, only to grab and support an unconscious Jean as he waves around his single blade to protect himself from a titan that is approaching them
