Why Do Studios Make Anime That Are Bad?

There are many amazing anime out there. But there is equally the same amount of mediocre or bad anime. It makes you wonder – why do bad anime get green-lit to be made?

It takes a lot of effort after all to make an anime. There’s (sometimes) royalties, scripts, budgeting, directing, animating, producing, voice acting, editing, and so much more. With so much going into making an anime, why would people bother to put so much effort into something they know will flop commercially? It’ll just be a waste of money. For companies they’re lucky they’ll break even or at worse, go into debt. For staff members, they can be lumped into the idea that they ‘helped make’ a ‘bad’ quality’ series even if they have no say.

So to answer for the question – it seems that these anime are made because of poor planning and communication. The original script is not what is made. A script/pitch is brought before many different people who have their own ideas and own power within the production. Each department having a different budget and ideas and communication channels effects how well something ends up.

The 2020 Releases I’m Most Excited For

Animal Crossing: New Horizons

My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising

I love MHA. I know the movie is already out but I haven’t watched it yet so I’m including it in this list. Can’t wait to cry over it, and then read non-stop fanfiction and go on a following fan artists spree these next few weeks.

She-Ra Season 5

Even though nothing is confirmed yet, I am putting it on this list because She-Ra: The Princesses of Power is one of my favourite Netflix series. Everything about it is so good, and I need more in my life.

Dragon Prince Season 4

This is another one of my favourite things I’ve watched on Netflix (and featured on the list despite that the next season has not yet been confirmed). Each season just keeps getting better, and that just makes me hyped for the next!

Umbrella Academy Season 2

Umbrella Academy was sooooooo good! I’m so keen for the next season! It can’t arrive fast enough!

All the Bright Places

This Netflix movie coming out is based upon Jennifer Niven’s book of the same name. I love her YA novels, so I’m interested to see what the movie will be like.

   One of the best character developments and he does actually have a very complex and great personality, good morals, and also has an interesting approach to things (he maintains a very humanitarian approach to issues throughout the series)

6 TIMES AOT: JUNIOR HIGH FORESHADOWED THE EVENTS OF AOT

There’s also a bunch of parallels (obviously) so I might make a list of them in another post later… But this series is really good for seeing things like the types of relationships character have with each other (who’s good friends, dynamics etc.) and also just to watch!

Junior High finished airing in December 2015, which was way before season 2 was released – so although some of the things I’ve mentioned in this list were already known to manga readers, those who were just watching the anime wouldn’t have been away of this stuff. And so I’m counting it as ‘foreshadowing.’

*Also numbers 1-3 on the list are season 2 spoilers, while 4 is a chapter 84 spoiler, and numbers 5-6 are chapter 104 and 105 spoilers*

1. Annie and Bertholdt wore the masks that related to their titans to the summer festival!
   
   
2. Freida Reiss was introduced as a character
   
3. Reddit user Kiza100 has questioned whether or not this moment from the summer festival when Ymir purposefully knocks shaved ice onto Annie and Bertholdt saves her from getting it spilled on her could be considered a foreshadowing. Because later on, in the manga Armin manipulates Bertholdt into believing that Annie is being tortured by the Survey Corps – which causes Bertholdt to threaten, and come close to, killing Armin and others. In this summer fair scene, Bertholdt gets red shaved ice all over himself to save Annie, similarly to how Bertholdt was willing to stain his hands with more blood because he wanted to protect Annie
   
4. Armin can’t be without his futon in Junior High. He needs to be kept excessively warm all the time by his futon, as without it he’ll start sneezing and catch a cold. However it has been shown that by wearing his futon Armin sweats quite a bit, which similar to Bertholdt. And Bertholdt sweats so much because as the Colossal Titan he emits heat, a trait that Armin could have developed after gaining the power of the Colossal Titan. Maybe this is a foreshadow to how Armin gains the titan power then?

4 TIMES CHARACTERS DIDN’T FOLLOW THEIR OWN ADVICE

But you know, hindsight is 20-20, or whatever

1. Hamlet (from Shakespeare’s Hamlet)

   
   I understand that the theme of interiority and that subjectivity are important in this play. Which then makes sense as to why Hamlet spends forever and forever thinking about what to do throughout the play. He is well known as a character of inaction, especially considering the fact that he does actually develop a plan about how he should go about finding out if the ghost is real and about how to avenge his late father. But then throw in some complications along the way, and the result is that Hamlet somehow never  really manages to get a ton done. He takes forever in between telling himself to act and then actually ending up doing anything about it despite that he keeps telling himself that he should act.

2. Louise (from Alien)

   
   This entire movie is about linguistics and communication, yet the linguistics expert chooses not to talk to the guy she knows is going to become her husband about how their child is going to die from cancer and that they’ll get divorced one day too? Instead she just asks him that if he could see his whole life ahead of him, would be change anything?? To which he says that he doesn’t really know, so you know… maybe then once you’re married and everything and he then asks you if you want to make a baby you could mention how you already know that this baby you’ll conceive will die just to check with him to see how he feels about all of this??? I mean, I understand where Louise’s coming from. But by sharing her knowledge about her life with her partner she most likely could have saved them both from a lot of heartache

3. Lucy (from Peanuts)

   
   Lucy gives out some pretty bad advice in her psychiatric booth. So maybe it’s good that her ‘patients’ never listen to it. However, considering that her advice pretty much only consists of ‘snap out of it’ and the fact that she has some serious unrequited love going on for Schroeder, resulting in her listening to him play at the end of his toy piano a lot of the time despite that she knows that he wants to model his life after Mozart, who has a bachelor…. I don’t know, maybe it might be good for Lucy to ‘snap out’ of her infatuation by toning it down a bit?

4. Armin (from Attack on Titan)

   
   I am so, so glad that Armin didn’t follow his own advice because if he had then we wouldn’t have Armin crying “a person who cannot sacrifice everything, can change nothing!” as he jumps off his horse to run across the flat terrain, only to grab and support an unconscious Jean as he waves around his single blade to protect himself from a titan that is approaching them

4 INTERESTING THEORIES ABOUT HOW ATTACK ON TITAN WILL END

*Season 2 and manga spoilers ahead!*

1. Eren will eat all the spinal fluids of the other Titan Shifters, before crystallising himself

2. This theory then uses the same idea of Eren crystallising himself, but elaborates a bit more on it

3. A variation of the above theory is that Eren will actually sacrifice himself to Historia, as only a member of the royal family can really undo all the harm that’s been caused throughout history to humanity. This way Historia will have the power of the coordinate and will be able to destroy the walls. Though she too will most likely have to sacrifice herself to rid the world of the Power of the Titans…

4. Another theory is that once Eren has all 9 shifter powers, Ymir Fritz will return (as her soul was split into the 9 Titan powers). So once all the powers rejoin, Ymir will be reborn and will return the shifter powers to the ‘power of the source of all organic material’ to where it belongs. This will free humanity from Titans and Ymir’s curse

6 ACTORS WHO’VE VOICED COMPLETELY DIFFERENT TYPES OF CHARACTERS

I think I’m just sitting here in a state of slight shock at the moment… But all these VAs are so talented! And they have so many other awesome roles that I could mention too!

1. Hiroshi Kamiya has voiced both Levi Ackerman and Mephisto Pheles!

   

   I think that I just find this kind of entertaining because Levi is obsessed with cleaning, while Mephisto loves chaos.

2. Natsuki Hanae has provided his voice for Ken Keneki and Inaho Kaizuka.

   

   An interesting character vs a cardboard personality?

3. Ono Daisuke is the voice of both Erwin Smith and Sebastian Michaelis!!!

   

   Well they’re both amazing… So I don’t really know why I’m surprised that they’re voiced by the same actor.

4. Mamoru Miyano has voiced Light Yagami and Rin Matsuoka.

   

   Wow. Just wow.

5. Megumi Ogata is the voice actress of both Yugi Muto and Sailor Uranus?!

   

   Okay, okay, I did not see that one coming at all!

6. Junichi Suwabe is the voice of both Victor Nikiforov and Juzo Sakakura.

   

   Victor can be a total airhead and is so excitable, while Juzo is… not.

8 ANIME SUPPORTING CHARACTERS WHO NEED SOME MORE LOVE

Or a spin off series. Either one works for me.

1. Moblit

   

   Essentially, this man in the epitome of a great human being.

   Moblit’s intelligent, responsible and clearly adaptable and patient enough to have become Hanje’s second-in-command (his contract probably states that the majority of his job is ensuring that Hange stays out of trouble). The guy is shown to be quite worried about Hange’s antics but handles everything very well, so he can clearly handle high amounts stress. However, he’s also shown to have a bit of a dangerous side as he’s helped Hange to torture and has even injured another person before without so much as blinking.

2. Sylvio

   

   He’s so dramatic. He could make an episode out of any little thing happens to him.

   He’s a sore loser, a crybaby and spoiled. He’s annoying as all hell, dramatic and arrogant. I love it.

3. Phichit

   

   This is the face Phichit makes as he threatens you with bodily harm… I’m sure of it.

   Give the boy his own show goddamnit! I want stalking, I want blackmail and I want a some excitement while he reaches for his staking dreams!

4. Clay

   

   The best boy.

   I love him. I just want to see more of him.

5. Matsuda

   

   He’s too pure and as you’ve all heard a million times before, I’m so proud of how far he comes throughout the series.

   Matsuda is my precious little baby. I’d definitely watch his adventures around the city and in the office and his take on helping solve the Kira case. He’d have a very different opinion on everything from the other characters in the Death Note series so I think it’d be interesting to watch.

6. Kisara

   

   She is beauty, grace and quiet confidence.

   We know so little about Kisara. What happened to her while she was a teenager? Where’s she been living? She’s probably travelled a bit and she’s definitely has been through a lot. Give me her story please!

7. Akamaru

   

   Not gonna lie… I would watch 100+ episodes of Akamaru doing literally nothing but existing.

   A day in the life of Akamaru? Yes! I’m here for it!

8. Kamaji

   

   This guy’s got dirt on every single employee at the bath house. You cannot change my mind.

   You can’t deny that Kamaji is an interesting character. He’s stuck down in the boiler room all day, but seems like the kind of guy who wouldn’t mind getting up to some mischief too… Or at least that he would get to witness a lot of drama unfold or stumble across other people’s secrets while he works!

I’D LIKE TO KNOW EXACTLY WHAT THESE CHARACTERS WERE THINKING WHEN THEY DID THESE 5 THINGS IN ‘ATTACK ON TITAN’ PLEASE

I can understand why these characters did what they did. This list just consists of some things that happened that we can look back on and realise that they weren’t really the best course of action to take regarding ‘self-preservation’…

1. When Connie completely missed the titan and hit the wall

   

   Couldn’t he have just tried to kill the Titan instead?

   After 3 years of training Connie? I understand that you were stressed, there was pressure, it was a moving target, but still? You could have just AIMED for the NAPE.

2. When Reiner’s identity complex got the better of him

   

   Bertholdt’s sweating intensified x100 at this point

   Yes Reiner. Telling Eren who’s hellbent on revenge against the Titans that you and Bertholdt are the ones who destroyed Wall Maria was really the best move in this situation. Definitely.

3. Those dudes who went back to retrieve their dead friend’s body

   

   I fully understand where they’re coming from. I do. But it was still a dumb decision.

   Okay, I understand it’s hard and that it hurts. But what did they think was going to happen when they took a DEAD BODY AWAY FROM A TITAN INFESTED TERRITORY AND THEN KEPT CARRYING THE BODY WITH THEM TOWARDS WHERE THERE WAS THE OTHER BODIES OF FALLEN SOLDIERS AND ALSO THE ALIVE SOLDIERS? ESPECIALLY CONSIDERING THAT TITANS EAT HUMANS AND ARE DRAWN TO LARGER CROWDS OF HUMANS??? They were told that it was too dangerous to retrieve their friend’s body and they still defied orders. I understand, but this is a case where they really should have been thinking a bit more with their heads rather than being driven by emotion.

4. When Amrin saved Jean

   

   Armin honey, I don’t think that’s going to work…

   “If you can’t give up anything, then you can’t change anything!” Armin screams as he clings to an unconscious Jean that he cradles in his arms while waving one blade around at a titan. And Armin’s a smart guy, he would have known that doing this meant certain doom and death for both of them. Though I am so glad that they are both still alive.

5. Connie and Sasha’s kung-fu

   

   I wouldn’t ever risk annoyed Shadis

   So yes, maybe as Shadis says these two are just “seriously stupid.” But wouldn’t they have realised that they clearly were going to get an ear-full from the scary sergeant who make them run and do extra duties and other things that could have so easily been avoided? And they could instead be resting or sleeping?
