  5. Mallow’s name comes from the word ‘mallow’ (shocking, I know). Mallow is a family of plants that includes cotton and this also explains why her Japanese name is Mao, which is from the Hawaiian word ‘ma’o,’ meaning ‘cotton’

  7. As it turns out, Acerola isn’t actually related to Nanu, whom she calls ‘uncle.’ It’s explained in the Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon: The Official Strategy Guide that Acerola calls Nanu this as a term of endearment and to show how close she is to Nanu

7 GENIUS ‘POKEMON’ THEORIES

Bless Reddit users and their theories

  1. Reddit user Oufour has theorised about how Pikachu most likely had another trainer before Ash. They discuss how Pikachu and Ash didn’t get along at all in the beginning of their relationship because Pikachu could have had bad experiences with his previous trainer, and as a result he became distrustful to all trainers.
    But Oufour also talks about how Pikachu has a different Poké Ball to all the other ones shown throughout the series. Pikachu’s has a lightning bolt symbol on it, which Oufour argues could be a seal. The reason why this seal is there then, is because it’s the Poké Ball that was used by Pikachu’s last trainer for him

  2. Reddit user friendlyteddie has come up with an explanation as to why Ash’s Squirtle and Bulbasaur never evolve. And it’s all to do with Charmander’s evolution into Charizard:
    “(Charizard) no longer obeys Ash, even going so far as to physically harm him. I believe that after seeing this, both Squirtle and Bulbasaur were traumatized, believing that evolution would completely change them, and possibly cause them to hate their friends and trainer. As a result, they make an agreement between the two of them that neither would evolve, hence they live the rest of their lives in their base forms”

  3. Reddit user Irish33 has theorised about who AZ from Pokémon X/Y is! He’s pretty old and is shown to be very concerned about the ‘original’ Pokémon and dislikes any new ones that have been created as the series has progressed. Irish33 says, “In my theory, AZ represents the people that were attracted to Pokémon Red and Blue as kids, and today swear off the series because ‘there’s too many Pokémon,’ or ‘they made it too complicated.’”
    This theory pretty much explains why AZ is an adult, and why his attitude towards different types of Pokémon is so terrible. He represents all the nostalgic people who were the first to watch Pokémon, but didn’t follow the series through all its different generations

  4. Reddit user ShinyBreloom2323 has theorised about how the character you play in Pokémon Sun and Moon might not be a hero after all… They’re a rival
    to Hau.
    Hau is the typical protagonist of a Pokémon game, while your character fulfils the role of what’s expected from the protagonist’s rival. You are earlier than him to everywhere (like the rivals Wally and Silver) and you surpass Hau in terms of training and game progress. As ShinyBreloom2323 says, “Hau isn’t an obstacle to you. You are an obstacle to Hau”

  5. Reddit user KokoaKuroba has tried to come up with a solution as to why Ash never seems to age! Way back in the original Pokémon series, in the first episode Ash comes across the legendary Pokémon Ho-oh. It’s written in the PokeDex that, “Anyone seeing (Ho-oh) is promised eternal happiness.” KokoaKuroba explains that, perhaps for Ash, eternal happiness means being on a continuous journey as a 10-year-old to become a Pokémon Master

  6. wonderfultim discusses how Pokémon Centres might seem to be pretty great, but they still would have to charge bills. This obviously makes sense, as the centres can’t just pay staff and run the place without an income. So wonderfultim has suggested that perhaps it’s actually your character’s mum who’s having to pay for all bills. Man, she sure is looking out for you…

  7. Reddit user rejectsuperstar created a theory about Pokémon Go. This theory states that the players in the game are, “all collectively playing as the bad guys… Think about it. Team Instinct, Team Valour, Team Mystic. When was there ever a team in a Pokémon game that wasn’t the antagonists?”

7 REASONS WHY JAMES IS MY FAVOURITE ‘POKEMON’ CHARACTER

He’s such a soft boy

  3. James is very skilled at make-up! He’s actually done Wobbuffet’s and Jessie’s make-up before

  4. James is shown to have a bit of a people-pleaser personality compared to most characters in the series (probably due to his upbringing). He’ll go along with what others want and is definitely the most emotional character in Team Rocket. When Team Rocket gets separated too, James doesn’t cope incredibly well and feels lost without his teammates. He’s also shown to have the most conscience out of the Pokemon villains. Somebody protect my son.

  5. Pokemon continously stab him, poison him, cling to him and he doesn’t hate them for it despite how much they hurt him. He always forgives his Pokemon and cares for them very much. He’s even had to put up with a Mereanie that fell in love with him (he goes scuba diving and a Mareanie thinks that he’s a Corsola because that’s what his mask looks like. So the Mareanie latches onto his head to attack him because Corsolas are food to them. The Mearanie then proceeds to inject poison into James, causing his head to turn purple. But because his hair is already purple… the Mareanie ends up thinking that he’s a handsome Mareanie and falls in love with him. So then he’s got a Mareanie clinging to him and it refuses to leave him. Oh! And whenever the Mareanie feels like its relationship with James is threatened, it proceeds to sting him again)

  6. James has a lot of different skills. He knows how to do Pokemon Haiku, Pokemon Oreinteering and PokeRinger. He’s also the series’ most loveable dork (bottle cap collection anyone?)

  7. James is one of the only trainers in the series to have asked Pokemon if they want to join his team. (While characters such as Misty have actually made fun of trainers, like Ash, for asking the Pokemon)
