Mai Zenin: A Discussion About Her Character and Story

*Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 149 Spoilers Ahead!*

I would highly suggest reading THIS POST and its thread made by u/Jmoney2131 about Mai Zenin’s character and story. It’s a wonderfully analytical read about Mai’s life, her goals, and her actions. I loved this post because it really added an extra understanding for me about Mai and Maki’s relationship, the problems in the Zenin clan and the JJK world, and how Mai didn’t want to be a sorcerer fighting for her life daily but instead wanted to live a comfortable life with her sister with a stable job – a goal that many people want in life.

Why is it So Hard To Choose a Favourite Jujutsu Kaisen Character?

In some series, it’s so easy to choose a favourite character. Team Edward? Or Team Jacob?

But so many people seem to struggle to pick favourite Jutjutsu Kaisen characters. I too fall prey to this. I love Yuji because he’s brave, compassionate and funny. I love Nobara because she’s a badass who loves shopping with a cool technique. I love Megumi because he’s private, has an interesting backstory/perspective and has an awesome technique. I love Maki because she’s insanely confident and powerful with interesting family dynamics. I love Nanami because of his ‘this is a 9-5 attitude’ and maturity. I love Inumaki because of his vocabulary, his reliability and his awesome technique marks. I love Choso because of his love of his brothers, his awesome technique and his beautiful character design. I could continue. You get the idea.

Perhaps it’s so hard to choose favourites because of character dynamics. Jujutsu Kaisen has some of the best dynamics! The first year trio, the second year trio, the Kyoto students, the first-second year Tokyo students, the Tokyo-Kyoto students, the teachers-students, the teachers, the villains… Again, I could continue. All of them have their moments and their own personalities so perhaps this makes it hard because we get to connect with all these characters.

I’ve put forward this ‘dynamics help showcase their qualities’ because there’s actually very little academic research done with regards to the topic of favourites. When researching the psychology of favourites, what shows up is papers regarding using children’s favourite characters/toys/something to help their educational development. Due to this lack of concrete understanding of how the psychology of favourites work, people assume it’s based upon: if a character is well written, if we relate to them, if they make us feeling something, if they draw in our interesting.

This definitely makes sense to me, as usually are favourites do actually tend to be characters that make us feel happy. This also links in with the idea that favourites are also based in our biology – as things that give us more happiness give us higher levels of happy hormones and this is how we know something is our favourite.

All of this allows me to conclude: it’s so hard to choose a favourite Jujutsu Kaisne character because so many of them make us feel happy because they’re well written, have interesting personalities, goals and backstories, have unique abilities, and have stellar character designs.

But what do you think? Do you have a favourite Jujutsu Kaisen character and if so, do you have a reason why?

What’s Your Favourite Anime Weapon?

Anime series have some very exciting and creative weapons.

I particularly like the 3D Maneuver Gear from Attack on Titan. It’s a very effective tool to use against titans and is so fun to watch the Scouts fly from tree to tree, do spins and more!

Death Scythes from Soul Eater are also such as interesting concept already with how someone is a ‘weapon.’ I also just like the shape of scythes and they swing around nicely when used.

Another weapon I like is Aizawa’s capture weapon because it’s innovative and complements his fighting style with his Erasure Quirk well. It’s fun to watch and interesting to see how versatile it is.

I also like Maki’s Cursed Tools. She’s so impressive to watch because she’s so talented with them. It’s fun to watch her make Panda carrying some too or use Megumi’s Shadow Storing Technique to store more weapons for her to effortless swap between.

Is there any weapons you’ve seen in an anime that’s your favourite?

What’s Your Favourite Anime Fight Scene?

Anime series are known to have some very engaging, well-animated and well-choreographed fight scenes.

One of my favourite fight scenes in anime that I’ve seen is Bakugou vs Uraraka. I love in this scene how it shows off their quirks and how well they can be used, but more importantly it showcases characters’ personalities. In this scene Uraraka is given the respect she deserves by Bakugou and Aizawa. Bakugou doesn’t view her as a ‘poor girl’ but gives her a real fight and doesn’t underestimate her at all – he’s shown to be excited to fight her because of his respect for her as a fighter. The audience also sees how Bakugou respects Uraraka, which is very important to start to show his character as his development is gradual in the series. I also respected Aizawa so much after this scene for how well he understands his students, how well he reads situations and how much he respects his students also.

I love the season 1 Hanami vs Tokyo and Kyoto students because we get to see so many different techniques in one fight. I like how originally in the Exchange Event the Kyoto students are against the Tokyo students because of their principal’s instructions that they have to follow – and now they come together. It shows how they’re all students and they come together because they actually have good relationships with each other. Watching Inumaki, Kamo and Fushiguro fight first against Hanami is so interesting to see the Crused Speech Technique, more of Fushiguro’s shikigami and Kamo’s Blood Manipulation Technique. Then swapping out to Maki getting to show off her physical prowess and skills with Cursed Tools and Megumi also showing how well he’s progressed with his Cursed Tools practise and his new technique was awesome. Then in the moment were they swap out with Itadori and Todo, it shows great teamwork how Maki comments that their work is ‘done’ and they can fall back to get their injuries healed.
