THE 2 THINGS I AM ALWAYS WATCHING

I guess the normalcy of it helps just set a ‘relax routine’ too?

I have 2 go-to things that I always watch. Usually after something like exam block when all I want to do is sleep; or if the week hasn’t been amazing and I just need something to do that’s calming and nice.

The first one of these things is Studio Ghibli films. Whichever one I feel like watching in that moment. I love Studio Ghibli and their films. They’re cute, visually lovely, story wise amazing and I don’t think I could ever get sick of watching them because of how wonderfully made they are.

My usual go-to ones though are Howl’s Moving Castle and Ponyo. With then The Wind Rises, The Tale of Princess Kaguya, Princess Mononoke, Kiki’s Delivery Service, From Up On Poppy Hill and When Marnie Was There making frequent reoccurrences too. They’re engaging, pretty to watch and easy to have an emotional response too. Lying down on the couch huddles in blankets alone watching these is truly the way to go.

My other one then is Daria. I love Daria so much. It’s funny and relatable, and I’m also always inspired by Daria and Jane and how there are in constant pursue of their passions throughout the series. Daria makes me want to invest more of my time into writing, and Jane makes me want to take up art again (both things that I struggle to maintain when life gets busy). There’s also enough episodes to give variety to choose from, so usually I just pick a random season to watch episodes from so that I don’t watch it so much that I become bored.

Studio Ghibli films and Daria both are things that I am always watching. And I do think that I have the mindset of ‘watching these are nice, and I’m going to enjoy it, and I’m going to feel relaxed and happier after watching these.’ Because so far they both seem do this trick very nicely!

GHIBLI CHALLENGE DAY 30: LEAST FAVOURITE MOVIE

“Always believe in yourself. Do this and no matter where you are, you will have nothing to fear.” – Baron, The Cat Returns

Now I know that technically Panda KoPanda is not a Ghibli movie. But Isao Takahata was the director and Hayao Miyazaki was the writer so I will count it just so I can say that it started off cutely, then got boring. I whipped out my DS to start playing Kingdom Hearts Re:Coded instead of paying attention to the movie, which honestly is an action that just speaks for itself

GHIBLI CHALLENGE DAY 20: FAVOURITE DIRECTOR

“I love Ponyo whether she’s a fish, human, or something in between.” – Sosuke, Ponyo

Hayao Miyazaki would have to take this title. He’s directed most of my favourite Ghibli movies, even though I also do love Isao Takahata too (and also quick appreciation for producer Toshio Suzuki).

6 FACTS TO KNOW ABOUT STUDIO GHIBLI

“Don’t expect perfection at first” – Shirou Nishi, Whisper of the Heart

  1. The films that Miyazaki directs are actually created completely in his vision. He’s the one to storyboard everything, and then use those images to create his filmsScreen Shot 2018-04-12 at 10.55.53 pm.png
  2. Before the company’s break, there was around 400 people on staff. These members had a range of jobs – from drawing frames by hand to then copying them and then digitally colouring them

  3. Studio Ghibli has produced 7 films that rank among the 15 highest-grossing anime films made in Japan

  4. Toshio Suzuki was Studio Ghibli’s producer for over 35 years before retiring from the role in 2014 (when he then took the position of general manager)Screen Shot 2018-04-12 at 10.56.19 pm.png
  5. Miyazaki doesn’t write scripts or screenplays. Instead, he works off of his extensive and detailed storyboards to create images for his stories and dialogueScreen Shot 2018-04-12 at 10.56.35 pm.png
  6. The name ‘Ghibli’ is based on what is known as the ‘Arabic sirocco’ (which is ‘the Mediterranean wind’). The studio decided on this name because they wanted to, “blow a new wind through the Japanese anime industry”Screen Shot 2018-04-12 at 10.56.50 pm.png
