ANSWERING 11 QUESTIONS FOR THE ‘LIEBSTER AWARD’

Liebster’ is a German word meaning beloved or dearest

‘Liebster’ is a German word meaning beloved or dearest

The Liebster Award is to show love to all types of bloggers – new and old! It’s a cool way to learn some new things about your favourite bloggers by having them answer some fun questions. It’s also a great way to find out things about the person behind the blog and help your readers love them as much as you do 😊

So a big thank-you to Chizurue for nominating me for the Liebster Award. I’m excited to answer your questions!!!

Here are the rules should you choose to accept the award…

  • Share the link of the blogger who has shown love to you by nominating you
  • Answer the 11 questions they ask
  • Nominate 11 bloggers for the same award in the spirit of sharing love and solidarity with our blogging family
  • Ask them 11 questions that you are dying for the answers to!

Here goes nothing! 😊

  1. What is your craziest dream?

    1.jpg
Um… well I don’t have many dreams and when I do it’s often about someone I care about dying so let’s not read too far into that *clears throat nervously*
I’d say my craziest dream had to be one from one I was about 10. It was a weird one that lasted FOREVER and my Mum once made the mistake about asking what happening in it and remained stuck at the dinner table for an hour… Essentially, it was a weird Ben 10/Transformers/Smurfs/Scooby-Doo and the Vampire King/soccer/Disney thing. For some reason I got to be the main character among this mess of constantly changing settings and scenes – spanning over a year period and surviving events like my house burning down and an alien invasion crashing my second cousin’s wedding after I slept in too late in a light-house esque building? Yet it all managed to tie together as the antagonist of this dream for some unknown reason had the ability to shape-shift and turned out to be the same villain in each scenario throughout… It was all very weird…

  2. A character you would like to meet in real life and be fast friends with (or maybe more than friends)? WHY? (Anything from anime, manga, k-drama, books, tv series)

    2.jpg
I’m going to say Phichit from Yuuri On Ice!!! He’s upbeat, loveable and has some awesome selfie-skills. Obviously we didn’t get a super thorough exploration of his character, but I’ve read enough fanfiction to know that Phichit is the kind of friend that I hope I can try my best to be like. I think he’d be lots of fun to hang out with and would be very supportive and loyal to you. He’s be willing to go the extra mile for you, listen intently to you, care for you and have a laugh with you but also know when to be a bit more serious. Not to mention you could learn a lot about social media and all those filters! I need all the help I can get!

  3. To follow up that previous one: Which fictional character would be the most boring to meet in real life?

    3.jpg
*Beings to radiate hatred just by thinking about this book* Literally any character from the novel The Wave. It is the WORST thing to exist as far as YA literature goes. I was forced to read it in year 9 and am scarred from the experience. There was so much potential in the book because the themes explored throughout it like conformity could have gone in so many directions! But no. The author instead decided to make the climax of the story when the football jock delicately, accidently pushes his girlfriend over who ends up completely unscathed (not even a grass blade on her) and then the book promptly ends about two chapters later (with each chapter probably being 5-10 pages long). If I ever meet any character from that book I would not be happy at all. They are all so boring, they have no personalities, there is nothing interesting that happens to them and they are all just unlikable characters. Words can barely express my dislike for this book I hate it so much

  4. Favourite music or album you could listen to all day? And why? Is it the lyrics, the melody or the vocals?

    4.jpg
Currently the song I’m listening to on loop is ET by Katy Perry. I’ve never had a particular fondness for it before but after reading I’ll Give You The Sun I keep thinking about how Noah and Brian joked about them being ‘not from this world’ and revolutionaries and since there isn’t enough fanfiction out there currently to feed my Noah x Brian shipping soul, this’ll have to do! I mean it’s also kind of catchy…

  5. What book/anime would you recommend to someone who have never read/watched the genre?

    51X9gH0wFbL.jpg
If someone hadn’t read a graphic novel before, I’d recommend reading Jim Henson’s Return To Labyrinth. The storyline is AWESOME and I found myself to really enjoy it! It had a bit of everything in it – adventure, fantasy, romance – and the characters were also unique!

  6. What are you deathly afraid of?

    6.jpg
I’d have to say fish. I really don’t like them and they always manage to freak me out.. I went kayaking the other day with my friends and almost capsized because some little fish came too close to me  >_<

  7. What is the weirdest pronunciation of a word for you?

    7.png
When people saying ‘oc-ward’ instead of ‘awkward.’ I know a few people who do this and no-one can ever explain to me why they pronounce the word like that but it makes me kinda cringe when I hear it

  8. What mythical creature would you like as a pet?

    8.jpg
    I’d like a familiar! Preferably a cat!

  9. What’s the most useless talent you have?

    9.png
I’m able to rant for up to 30 minutes with seemingly being able to not take a breath… It’s one of the perks of learning a musical instrument! Learning to take small, unnoticeable breaths so that no-one else can intercept you!

  10. If you could level up humans as a species, what stat or ability would you increase? And why?

    10.png
If there was an acceptance stat, then I’d up that. Most people are great at being understanding and accepting but if we could all as a species be more accepting then that would be amazing!

  11. Would you rather live your entire life in a virtual reality where all your wishes are granted or in the real world? Explain your choice

    11.jpg
I’d say the real world. Life isn’t always rosy and there are bad things that are going to happen. We need to learn how to love life through the good and the bad. Without challenges we’ll never have a sense of accomplishment and never get to appreciate the good things in our life if we can get whatever we want whenever we want

Bonus question: What is that one word to describe yourself?

THE 4 TYPES OF LOVE FEATURED IN ‘I’LL GIVE YOU THE SUN’

“Quick, make a wish. Take a (second or third or fourth) chance. Remake the world.” – Jandy Nelson

“Quick, make a wish. Take a (second or third or fourth) chance. Remake the world.” – Jandy Nelson

Written by Jandy Nelson, this novel tells the story of a set of twins – Noah and Jude. At thirteen, Noah is constantly drawing and is isolated from the other kids. At sixteen, Jude needs to prove herself as a sculptor and in doing so meets a new, unpredictable force in her life. And all the while, both are falling in love with boys they can’t have… This is a story about love – about love between family, about love between twins and about love between an artist and their art.

  1. Love between family

    1

Noah and Jude have ever-evolving relationships with their parents. Throughout the novel their family dynamic is continuously changing and it’s lovely to see how this not only shapes the characters and their actions, but also how it affects their reaction to forgiveness

  1. Love between twins

    2.png

When Noah and Jude were younger they were practically inseparable – they were each other’s best friend. But as they grow up things change, and at the age of sixteen they’re not even talking to each other. But throughout the novel, Nelson proves just how strong Noah and Jude’s love for each other is

  1. Romantic love

    4.png

Noah’s falling in love with the charismatic, smart, and just generally talented boy next door. Jude’s falling in love with a charming, broken boy. Both relationships are quite different – and as readers we get to see the different things Noah and Jude value in people and a relationship, and how they react to their own feelings

  1. Love between an artist and their art

    3.png

Noah likes to draw and paint while Jude sculpts. The basis of many events in this novel revolve around art. Noah and Jude have to learn about their art, learn about what it means to them, how to express themselves through art and learn about the relationships artists have with their art and ideas. Essentially, they have to learn about the importance of art in their lives and the meaning it holds for them

12 REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD BE WATCHING ‘PORCO ROSSO’

“You make me think humanity’s not a complete waste” – Porco Rosso

“You make me think humanity’s not a complete waste” – Porco Rosso

Porco Rosso, released in 1992, revolves around the story of an Italian World War I ex-fighter pilot. Porco Rosso was Italy’s ace in the sky, but now lives as a freelance bounty hunter chasing sky-pirates. However, a strange curse has transformed him into a pig…

  1. It’s humorous

    1.jpg

  2. It’s “a tale of missed opportunities”

    2.jpg

  3. Miyazaki has managed to find a balance between the light-heartedness of the film and the deeper themes

    3.jpg

  4. Despite all the rivalries and sky-pirates that feature in the film – the storyline grounds the film

    4.jpg

  5. There’s a curse involved…

    5.jpg

  6. It’s revealed that Porco Rosso is tragic fairy tale – due to Porco’s curse and the impossible love story he has with Gina

    6.jpg

  7. The characters are loveable

    7.jpg

  8. With this film, you can watch it with the French language track on. It’s an experience to watch Porco Rosso in a romance language because majority of the characters, including the main character, in the movie are Italian

    8.jpg

  9. Joe Hisaishi composed the music. I mean, do you even need another reason?

    9.jpg

  10. Fio breaks gender norms – she’s a mechanic and she’s definitely good at what she does. She’s also a good negotiator, intelligent and knows how stands up for herself

    10.jpg

  11. Miyazaki also puts some more feminism in the movie. As Porco’s regular mechanic’s sons have all migrated (due to The Great Depression), the mechanic uses an all-female team repair the plane

    11

  12. Porco Rosso is one of the few films directed by Miyazaki in which the historical and geographical settings are clearly defined

4 OF THE BEST ‘HYOUKA’ MYSTERIES

Eru Chitanda (to be said with sparkling, wide eyes): I’m… curious!

Eru Chitanda (to be said with sparkling, wide eyes): I’m… curious!

  1. The Movie Murder that No-one Noticed

    1.jpg
    Begun In: episode 8
    Solved In: episode 11
    Solved By: Hōtarō Oreki

In this mystery, the Classics Club is invited to an exclusive preview to a film made by the students in Class 2-F for an assignment. But when they realise that the mystery-murder movie is incomplete and the script writer is away from school sick, it becomes a test of Oreki’s abilities to solve the mystery of which character in the film is the murderer.

I loved watching Oreki solve this mystery! It really makes you think, and his end conclusion of the cameraman actually being a character is quite out-of-the-box thinking… However, after solving this case, Oreki admits that he could have been wrong – as no-one can ever truly know the exact intentions of a scriptwriter (or event artist, author etc.) without them explaining what they are.

  1. The Origins of Hyouka

    2.jpg
    Begun In: episode 3
    Solved In: episode 5
    Solved By: Hōtarō Oreki

After the Classics Club is re-established by Eru, she reveals that her agenda is to discover the origins of Hyouka, the official publication of the club with a 45-year history, to find out more about her uncle’s life when he was a part of the club during his own high school years.

I like that all the club members get involved in this mystery – coming up with their own conclusions and trying to help solve the case. It was interesting to learn too that ‘hyouka’ (meaning ice-cream) is a pun that the Classics Club came up with on the English phrase ‘I scream.’

  2. Juumonji Incident

    3.jpg
    Begun In: episode 12
    Solved In: episode 17
    Solved By: Hōtarō Oreki

Oh no! Things are going missing from all the different clubs during the Kan’ya Festival with only a cryptic note from the thief left behind…

By this far into the series, we’re all trying to solve the mysteries that pop up throughout the series. This one spans over six episodes so it keeps you occupied for a while, especially as you get to see all the different, exciting clubs available at the high school!

  3. The Homemade Chocolates Case

    4.jpg
    Begun In: episode 21
    Solved In: episode 21
    Solved By: Hōtarō Oreki

Last year, Mayaka gave Sotashi chocolates on Valentine’s Day in the attempt to get him to accept her feelings – but this fails when he critiques the quality of the chocolate she made. So, this year Mayaka asks Eru to help her making a better chocolate for Sotashi. Mayaka leaves it out for Sotashi in the club room, but the chocolate disappears…

This episode was actually kind of sad… I admire how Oreki, Eru and Mayaka acted in this episode too. Although Oreki hears about the disappearance of the chocolate and automatically realises that Sotashi is the one who hid it, he fakes helping Eru ‘solve’ the mystery so that Mayaka won’t be crushed. After they all leave to go home, Oreki also confronts Sotashi about his suspicions and demands an answer too – showing a backbone and wanting a justification for Sotashi hurting Mayaka’s feelings. Mayaka also takes everything incredibly well. She explains to Eru as they walk home that she already figured out that Sotashi was the one who took the chocolate, before agreeing to eat lots of food with Eru to cheer herself up. Eru also stands by Mayaka the whole time. Eru, like any good friend, is desperate for Oreki to find the chocolate so that Mayaka doesn’t have to be discouraged by misplacing it – she is fully invested in Mayaka’s happiness.

THE 5 FLAMING HOTTIES TAG

Please don’t judge my tastes in fictional males…

Please don’t judge my tastes in fictional males…

I began this blog 37 days ago and as I was still learning to navigate all the options to click on at my disposal in the sidebar, the unimaginable happened… Merlin nominated me in a tag! So obviously, I promptly began to do what any other person would do in a situation where they are equally excited and slightly panicked about not doing well: have an existential crisis.

But don’t worry! I’ve managed to prevail! (And definitely didn’t come to the realisation that this is a fabulous way to procrastinate studying for that chemistry exam I have on Monday…)

The rules of this tag are pretty simple! (Meaning that I will most likely stuff something up in this blog post because it’s my superpower. Actually, I’ve been thinking about using ‘Disaster Girl’ as my alias. Any thoughts about it? My costume is still in the process of being designed though… It ended up being a longer, more gruelling internal battle about whether or not to incorporate Crocs or spandex leggings into the outfit than I initially thought it would be.) The rules are as follow:

  1. Mention the name of the blog you were tagged by, as well as the creators of this game – Realweegiemidget Reviews and Thoughts All Sorts – to all blogs involved and including this picture below –
    fiveflaminghotties
  2. List five of your greatest hotties from TV and/or film, i.e. crushes/objects of your affection, including musicians or sports stars too
  3. Tell us how you were introduced to them and why you like them/what appeals
  4. Add some appealing pictures
  5. Tag seven bloggers for their Five Flaming Hotties
  6. Post the rules

Challenged accepted! 🙂

Surprisingly, this was actually kind of hard to come up with a list of five of my top hotties. I’ve never thought of anyone, fictional or real, as ‘hot’ before and realised that the closest endearing adjective I use to describe someone is ‘cute.’ So, after holding the preliminary trials (in which I decided just to stick with fictional characters for this tag) and completing the knock-out rounds for my successful contestants, I’ve come up with my list of 5 of my top hotties!  So, without further ado, here they are:

  1. L – Death Note

    1a.jpg1b.png1c.PNG
Ah… Death Note... My best friend is actually the one who recommended it to me when I started watching anime a couple of years back, and since then I haven’t looked back.
I’d like to start off by asking: do you know someone who can pull off bed-head, casual clothes and bags under their eyes WELL? That takes talent. And it is a talent I have respect for. L’s simply gorgeous in his own way.
And obviously, L is very intelligent. He’s also presented at times to be a bit more vulnerable – like when he talked about not having a friend before… But the thing I love most about L is that he has his little quirks that make him all the more loveable and he has also has a quieter, socially-awkward side – making him easier to relate to. I find him to be a character I can emphasise with, and for that he’s on my list.

  1. Howl – Howl’s Moving Castle

    2a.jpg1b.jpg1c
I remember that the first time I watched Howl’s Moving Castle in year 8 and unlike the other 13-year-olds in my class, I wasn’t gushing over him. All the other girls in my class were just interested in his appearance (particularly his eyes) while I was more focused upon actually taking in the entirety of the movie – not daydreaming about a fictional wizard in front of the rest of the class and the teacher. Don’t get me wrong – I loved Howl’s personality and still do – but it’s only been over time that I’ve gained more appreciation for his pleasing aesthetic too. Because really, Howl is a gorgeous man.
But he’s not only easy of the eyes, he’s also a character whose personality I’m fond of. He loves Sophie for who she is and tries to help her realise that she is special. He wants the girl he loves to love herself and be happy. He’s compassionate, loving and talented. To be honest I don’t even mind about his vanity because it’s something I more often than not end up laughing it – so if you’re ever having a break-down about your looks, I’m probably of no help to you.
Also, Christian Bale does an incredible job as the voice of Howl in the English dub!

  1. Axel – Kingdom Hearts

    3a.jpg3b.jpg3c.jpg
I think it’s the confidence? And that flawless sense of humour. Need a quick one-liner? Axel’s got it. Need just generally a character to appear that can be equally goofy, cool, relatable, skilled and endearing? Axel’s got it covered.
My first introduction to Axel was Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days. It was my ninth birthday and I’d just gotten my first DS! There was a special on where I could choose between a Barbie game or a DC game (I think it was a Batman one?) that came with the DS. But they had sold out of them all… *insert dramatic music* So, the kind sales assistant told me that I could pick out any game I’d like and they’d just subtract the $20 cost of the meant-to-be sold-with-the-DS games from the cost of the game I ended up buying – which was Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days. I saw the back of the DS game case had Mickey Mouse on it, so obviously I was instantly interested. And then I read the catchy blurb on the back and became determined that this was the game I was getting.
When I got home and started playing the game Axel and Roxas were the first characters featured, and they made a great impression. Axel has such a cool look: red hair styled into spikes, a black coat, clear green eyes and two stylish tattoos. And all the while, he was chilling with his friend as he went on about why the sun sets red and eating sea salt ice-cream. I immediately loved his character and playing games from more of the Kingdom Hearts series has only cemented this.

  1. Flynn Rider – Tangled

    4a.jpg2b.jpg4c.png
    Tangled
is an awesome movie. I love all the characters in it, especially Flynn. He’s good-looking AND the comedy backbone of this film. His wit and humour had me laughing so much the first time I watched the movie and when he sacrificed himself for Rapunzel and I started crying, the five-year-old sitting next to me in the cinema began to give me concerned glances… *can’t continue because they’re beginning to sob too much*

  2. Dick Grayson – DC

    5b.png5c.pngCapture.PNG
My first DC cartoon series that I was really into was The Batman and although I liked Dick, Barbra was my favourite so he got shadowed under the rug a lot.
But a few months after The Batman was no longer airing, I then started watching Young Justice. A few episodes in and Dick and Wally were by far already my favourites.
Dick was smart, funny and a bit quirky. And I loved watching the scenes he fought in! Then Young Justice: Invasion came around and he’d had a bit of a glo up which I definitely appreciated (as you can see above). He had also obviously matured, even though he did make mistakes, but was still the same guy. I was actually pretty disappointed that we barely ever got to see him out on the battlefield… He’s one of my favourite characters from the series to watch fight or train.

Now that we’ve reached the end of my list, here’s my seven nominees for this tag! 🙂

  1. Animejnr
  2. Chizurue
  3. Crimson613
  4. Rossiroad
  5. Chaotic Lass
  6. Regan222
  7. Rodrovich

P.S. I’m sorry if I’ve nominated you and you’ve already participated in this tag! I probably don’t know enough people to ensure that I don’t re-nominate you… I hear friends are something you find outside? Like, in the heat. Where pyjamas are not an acceptable attire. Where there’s sunlight. And dirt. And drop-bears. I mean, have you SEEN those things? Terrifying. Really, truly terrifying.

Thanks for reading everyone! I hope you enjoyed it!!! Have a good day 🙂

3 REASONS TO LOVE THE MOVIE ‘PONYO’

Ponyo loves Sosuke!

Ponyo loves Sosuke!

  1. It’s more than just a love story

    1.PNG
This movie isn’t just about love, it’s about the ocean and the environment too. Like other Miyazaki films, environmentalism is a strong theme throughout the movie. Ponyo explores the idea of humans as a devastating force that pollutes the environment, particularly the ocean. Miyazaki leaves his audience with the affirmation that the ocean is not just some dumping ground for our rubbish, it is a world all of its own.

  2. The characters are realistic

    2.PNG
We have young children with round, little tummies and chubby, soft faces. Ponyo and Sosuke act like children – neither are perfect but show the same resourcefulness and bravery that real-life five-year-olds are capable of.
Miyazaki has also provided us with a remarkable female character, Lisa. She is simply a mother who has her own flaws and importantly, she is not solely defined by her role as a mother. We see her arguing with her husband while he’s at sea, we see her at work and we see her share gleeful moments with her child. Lisa isn’t an idealised mother figure, she’s a whole person.
Fujimoto also isn’t your stereotypical antagonist. He may be controlling, but it’s clear that he’s doing what he thinks is best for both his daughter and the ocean. In fact, he isn’t a villain at all.

  3. In Ponyo, the people you love are simply the people you love

    3.PNG
Ponyo and Sosuke’s relationship is one filled with childlike emotions. You could say what they have is love or a deep friendship, but it doesn’t really matter. They bond quickly like another pair of five-year-olds would and it’s easy for Ponyo to tell Sosuke she loves him like one would say to any other significant figure in their life.
Sosuke also finds it easy to transfer his love for his goldfish to the human girl Ponyo becomes – because he loves her simply as the Ponyo that he loves.
