First impressions can really be make or break for some people – with some willing to watch a few episodes before dropping an anime and others not wanting to gruel through an hour before a series gets better.
An anime that many fans seem to think starts of slowly is Steins; Gate – where there’s a lot of talk that’s hard to follow and not that much happening. People say it’s really not until approximately half way through the series that the pace picks up and the series gets amazing. The consensus seems to be that it’s good that the characters are built up since the second half of the series is fast-paced and twist-filled, but it was kind of boring to get through the first half.
What’s the worst first arc that you’ve seen?

I have what I call my one-episode rule. Meaning I give every anime a chance, but if it doesn’t hook me within that time, I will give it up, because I have only so many hours in my lifespan. As such, I could not begin to guess at the worst anime beginning I’ve ever seen. It’s like trying to pick out a specific needle in a pile of needles.

Interesting rule! I definitely think it’s a great idea especially for those who comb through all the mass seasonal episode releases there are

Hmm, bad starts, that’s a tough one. I’ve seen a lot, but most of the time it’s just because the anime was in a different genre than I thought, so it was never an anime I would have liked in the first place. Like Puella Magi Madoka Magica, I thought it was going to be a cute magic girl anime. Someone actually told me that it was like a modern Card Captor Sakura (I’m a huge fan of CCS and cute anime) and that I would love it. After watching 1 or 2 episodes I found out that it really really was not!

That’s surprising to hear! I would of thought it’s a magic girl anime as well!
Genres can be so hard to figure out lol. Especially with a lot of online information using similar genres interchangeably

Yeah, from what I remember of Steins;Gate (though it has definitely been a while) I would say this is pretty fair. I think one that people tend to ignore because of how good the rest of the show ends up being is Fate/Zero. That 45 minute intro is low-key a snooze fest.

It’d be very interesting to see how anime episodes vs manga chapters work in terms of ‘slow’ builds. I know manga authors are under such pressure to keep their numbers up, but since anime episodes are pretty much set for a set amount of episodes for a season it’d be interesting to see how interest is gauged by the studio
