“Society has monsters lurking in it that are far nastier than a demon like me” – Sebastian (to Ciel)
- Sebastian’s last name, Michaelis, is derived from the Japanese word ‘mikari,’ meaning ‘repayment’
- Sebastian is said to be based upon an inquisitor from the 16th century who wrote about the classification of the demons of Hell and about possession
- Whenever Sebastian does something that humans find impressive he always says, “I am simply one hell of a butler.” But in Japanese, what he says can also be read as, “I am both a demon and a butler”
- Sebastian is first introduced as a crow – but this only happens in anime. In the manga Sebastian is first revealed in his ‘true form’
- Demons cannot taste. So when Sebastian ‘tastes’ the curry, we can assume that he can taste to some extent – just maybe not in the same way that humans can. This explains why he needs practise to get his cooking right, because he needs to learn what tastes good to humans?
- When Sebastian raises a handkerchief cover his face in episode 17, this suggests that demons have an aversion for salt. However, no other objects seems to have an effect on Sebastian – as he has no problems with Churches or rosary beads
- Sebastian is fluent in French and Latin, and can also speak German and East Franconian
- There is a definite resemblance between Sebastian and Vincent. This is actually intentional, though Yana Toboso hasn’t revealed why she chose to draw them this way
- Back in the Victorian era butlers were called by their last name. So that means that Ciel should technically be calling Sebastian ‘Michaelis’ and the other servants should be calling him ‘Mr Michaelis’
- Sebastian is shown to love cats, though it’s implied throughout the series that he hates dogs. Ironically, Ciel named Sebastian after his late dog…
- In early drafts of Black Butler, Sebastian’s hair was styled with a 7:3 ratio parting. However, Toboso’s editorial staff didn’t like this hairstyle, so she had to change Sebastian’s hair to that of a middle part

Love this post 😀 Sebastian sure is an interesting character (not to mention very handsome hehe).
Still don’t like how his character treats Grell though. 😦
