I mean, it was Goro Miyazaki’s first film… And Hayao didn’t think he had enough experience to direct a film, which is fair enough… But the animation in the film is still wonderful!

  1. Tales from Earthsea had been a dream of Hayao Miyazaki’s for many years. He wanted to create a film based upon the fantasy novel series by Ursula K. Le Guin (published 1968 – 2001). Le Guin originally did not want to give Studio Ghibli the rights to the series, however later changed her mind after the success of Spirited Away. (Miyazaki ended up being unable to direct this film though… He was already in the middle of the production of Howl’s Moving Castle)Screen Shot 2018-02-18 at 9.24.49 pm.png
  2. It was questioned which book in the novel series the movie would be based upon, however none of them ended up being adapted to film… Although some of the characters’ names from the novels were used for the film (like Cob) and there are some similarities between characters (in both there is a girl with a burn mark), the plot is completely different. The film’s storyline was instead based upon Hayao Miyazaki’s manga The Journey of ShunaScreen Shot 2018-02-18 at 9.25.10 pm.png
